Liaison is a kind of interpreting popular for meetings in smaller groups, trips or study visits. It is used at meetings, during which note taking is difficult, for example at a visit to a factory or at the court hearing of an expert witness.
As these types of meetings are frequently held in such places where acoustics are poor, the interpreter does use of specialised equipment. In addition, the delegates are often moving, e.g. at a study visit, so the interpreter usually does not take notes. This means that the interpreter translates short fragments of speech, sentence by sentence, so as not to miss any element of what is being said.
During the trip the interpreter also assists delegates in communication outside official meetings, such as while traveling or at the hotel.
